Beyond the Landfill: Illustrating the Reality of Waste Processing
Speculative Environments
Supervisor - Mr. Richard Ho
Waste is a by-product of human civilisation; it is generated, in massive amounts, by mankind’s relentless pursuit for resourceintensive, consumer-based lifestyles that drive much of the world’s economies. In a land scarce Singapore, this eventually leads to the depletion of space to accommodate the excessive supply of rubbish. Despite initiating recycling efforts by the government, Singapore’s waste output continues to grow constantly, with little improvement in recycling rates. Amidst the contestation of space between rubbish and man, new research has surfaced on converting incineration ash to potentially replace sand as a sustainable resource. Using such a process to advocate upcycling instead of recycling, in hopes to put light on the critical problems on Singapore’s waste management strategies out there as a public spectacle.
