Precariat Palace in the Sky

Speculative Environments

Supervisor - Mr. Tomohisa Miyauchi

This thesis envisages a speculative environment in Shibuya, Tokyo, through the glorification of the precarious workers, elevating them from the cracks of society as a result of the shift in the labour system. Extracting building elements from both traditional and modern forms of escapism, the intervention taps on the evolution of the screen, a translation of how the precariat operate behind computers’ screens to the evolution from a physical billboard, to digital media facades, in which the thesis then attempts to execute the inhabitation of the screen. The precariat start to dominate the elevational facades of the city, reflecting their growing dominance in the labour workforce on the cityscape’s facade as well as signalling an era of a new working class.
