From Conflict to Coexistence
Urban Commons and Wellness
Supervisor - Dr. Tan Beng Kiang
In land scarce Singapore where rapid development has always been the sole imperative, increasing demand for residential spaces has led to an inevitable foray into forested areas, which have become commodified and highly sought after. The creation of a residential estate right next to BTNR has led to a lack of buffer between urban Singapore and the forests of Bukit Timah. As a result, the proximity between human and wildlife populations is greatly increased, which inadvertently creates an interface zone whereby human-wildlife conflict (HWC) occurs. To address tensions that arise with inevitable and increasing wildlife encroachment into the urban household, a new paradigm of architecture can be conceptualized and employed to help ameliorate HWC.
