Chennai Unclogged aims to address the challenges and build upon the potentials of Chennai City in the midst of drought, floods and waste issues. This project lays its foundations on the natural topography and site conditions, as well as the traditional erys system, an ancient water engineer marvel that has been put in place without technology or large infrastructure. Through the natural landscape, the project laid out a concept plan that formed a complex intricate layered web structure plan that inputs multiple aspects such as water, waste, mobility, energy and urbanization. This will guide the structure planning of Pallikaranai, a site chosen for its unique web-like structure and high percentage of multiple-tiered erys system that cascades into the marshland that is currently a wasteland and dumping ground for the rest of the city. It is closest to addressing inland and coastal issues that allows it to become a prime spot to test out the kits of a masterplan, namely: erys prototype, finger prototype, main spine (marshland) prototype, canal (river) prototype and coastal prototype.
