Inspiriting Chinatown 重生

Speculative Environments

Supervisor - Dr. Joseph Lim

'Inspiriting Chinatown' aims to reconstruct a cultural oasis within Singapore’s commercialised city center. Following the past decades of evolving socio-political landscape, the roles of traditional Chinese clans have ebbed from being indispensable pillars of social support to an almost obsolete state today. While the present-day government provides support in hopes of preserving this diminutive remnant of cultural capital, the past phases of ‘nation-branding’ and gentrification had already resulted in an unfortunate dilution of cultural diversity. What’s left behind now are fragments of the past – isolated and struggling to survive. The project is hence a fervent attempt to prevent these cultural communities from becoming vestigial, thereby resisting the death of our traditional art forms.
