Sanya 山谷: The Forgotten District

Atmosphere and Agency

Supervisor - Dr. Simone Chung

The district of Sanya in Taito-ward is historically the ‘doya town’ of Tokyo and was one of the three main day labour markets in Japan. Abandoned, hostile and dangerous are words locals would use to describe the area, but the homeless – who once held lucrative jobs as day labourers – call it their home. With the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics, its prime location and low rental costs, Sanya is an area predicted to see an increase in tourism traffic. Through the appropriation of architectural interventions in four different phases, the tourism market is tapped into to kickstart a self-sustainable micro-economy within Sanya that would alleviate the living conditions of the homeless and allow them to obtain independence and a self-sustainable livelihood.
