Atmosphere and Agency

Asian cities have experienced urban growth at an exponential rate and experienced multiple models of developmentalism in a compressed duration. This has led to the chaotic and disorganised nature of many urban centers in Asian cities. Contemporary development principles are strongly influenced by profit maximizing attitudes, resulting in the negligence of local and cultural interests. The application of Complexity Theory in the field of architecture promises an alternative response towards planning Asian complex spaces. Seoul, demonstrating an exemplary resilience to change, was selected as a topic of study to offer insights to the concurrent efforts of modernization and cultural preservation.
Through an inquiry into the source of resilience in Seoul, this thesis strives to inform a design solution which can introduce order into disorganised Asian space while securing the vibrancy and diversity of complexity.
