WHY HOMELESS? WHY HAWKER CENTRE? WHY GRID SYSTEM?

Homelessness is a complex issue due to its context in Singapore which is not just about shelter, rather about the awareness of the issue and integration of homeless in the existing community. How can Architecture stimulate social integration for the homeless? Through Integration with the existing community, it will strengthen the social support for the homeless, increasing the chances of breaking out of the poverty cycle. Perspectives towards perceiving homelessness changes as well through the evolution of a new typology of relationship between different stakeholders. This is achieve in the project according to the following objectives.

  1. To create a symbiotic community that coexist within the same space through the use of co-sharing spaces to maximise utilization of space and integration through partnership between existing community and the ‚homeless‚ community.

  2. Perceiving homelessness as temporal lifestyle to address the issue in a positive perspective

  3. Duality of space through short term and long term evolution
