A vibrant sanctuary for all

Speculative Environments

Supervisor - Mr. Richard Ho

Description: This design thesis is a critique on the current practices of defensive architecture in Singapore, namely the household shelters. Presently, these shelters are often used as storerooms, maid's room and wine cellars. In times of need, preparation of the shelter for occupancy would be a daunting task, especially so for the vulnerable people within our communities. Additionally, there are further steps to take for occupying the shelters, for example, bringing in essential supplies while not being allowed to lean against the walls or doors. The shelter also lacks necessary services to ensure a comfortable stay since there will be no proper ventilation. Consequently, the architectural proposal is to create a vibrant yet well-equipped prototypical community shelter that can function during peacetime, filled with programs that supports its war time endeavours, attracting members of the public to use the spaces, familiarising themselves so that they would be predisposed to staying in times of crisis.
