Pulau Ubin Interpretive Centre l Cultural Manifestation through Local Activities and Post-Industrial Landscape
Conservation and Heritage
Supervisor - Mr. Ho Weng Hin
The thesis project documents an underappreciated aspect of Singapore history - granite quarrying and its relationship with the social organization and religious practices in the post-independence era.
Focusing on Singapore’s last offshore kampung in Pulau Ubin, the project examines and questions the notion of legacy and heritage pertaining to post-industrial sites.
Through new construction that blends into the surrounding context and adaptive reuse, a Taoist temple and part of Ubin Quarry are transformed into an interpretive centre with religious, community and museum activities. The intervention seeks to develop a culture syntax based on these activities to ultimately enhance the place identity of Pulau Ubin.
